WCIT Joins Coalition to Urge USMCA Extension
1Overview
WCIT has joined a broad, bipartisan coalition of more than 35 organizations in sending a formal letter to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer urging the extension of the trilateral United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) during the critical Joint Review on July 1, 2026.
The letter, dated April 6, 2026, reflects unified regional and national voices — spanning agriculture, energy, aerospace, technology, and business associations — calling on the Administration to preserve and strengthen a framework that has delivered measurable economic benefits to the Pacific Northwest and the nation.
2Why USMCA Renewal Matters
The USMCA — which replaced NAFTA in 2020 — created a modern, rules-based framework for North American trade, covering intellectual property, digital commerce, automotive supply chains, and agricultural market access. The 2026 Joint Review is the first formal opportunity for all three countries to assess the Agreement's performance and lock in continued certainty for the next 16 years.
"Maintaining a predictable, rules-based trilateral USMCA strengthens the resilience of these industries and advances economic security across North America."
— Coalition Letter to Ambassador Greer, April 6, 2026Businesses rely on predictable market conditions to make long-term investment decisions. A renewed USMCA gives industry the confidence to plan for the next 16 years — increasing the U.S.'s economic advantage and ensuring Washington exporters remain competitive on the global stage.
3What the Letter Says
Addressed directly to Ambassador Greer, the letter makes five key arguments for extending the USMCA in its trilateral form:
- Broad public support for renewal. Of nearly 1,600 public comments submitted during the USTR's solicitation process, a significant portion urged renewal — citing supply chain certainty, domestic manufacturing investment, and long-term economic resilience.
- Bipartisan Congressional backing. Congressional leaders and state legislators across both parties have championed the Agreement, citing new jobs and hundreds of billions of dollars in American investment flowing from USMCA.
- National security and supply chains. The letter frames USMCA as an essential element of the U.S. National Security Strategy — prioritizing regional supply chain integration, domestic manufacturing, and homeland security.
- Long-term business certainty. Businesses rely on stable, predictable market conditions to make investment decisions. A renewed USMCA gives industry the confidence to plan and invest for the next 16 years.
- An opportunity to strengthen the agreement. The Joint Review is not just about preserving what works — it is a chance to evaluate performance and improve the agreement's functionality for the future.
4WCIT's Role and Commitment
WCIT has long championed free and fair trade policies that support Washington's globally connected economy. Our co-signature on this letter reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring Washington businesses, workers, and communities have a voice in federal trade policy decisions that shape their future.
We will continue to engage with USTR, the Administration, and our Congressional delegation throughout the Joint Review process to advocate for an outcome that strengthens North American supply chains, delivers predictability for Washington exporters, and maintains the economic relationships that underpin our state's prosperity.
