WCIT Comments on International Trade Issues

SEATTLE — The flurry of trade related news this week raises significant concerns that could impact Washington State businesses, farmers, workers and consumers. From warnings that any U.S.-China trade deal may be pushed off until after the 2020 elections, to the imposition of tariffs on metal from Brazil and Argentina to rumblings of additional actions by China on U.S. goods, the current trade climate could result in considerable harm to our state’s economy.

As the Pacific Northwest’s premier trade organization representing a diverse membership across sectors and counties throughout the state, The Washington Council on International Trade (WCIT) is alarmed by the current rhetoric and concerned about the potential impact that tariffs and other trade actions could have on the state of Washington. While we support the broader goals of leveling the playing field for U.S. companies, tariffs are an ineffective means that hurt our economy and place a heavy burden on our communities and our businesses, farmers, workers and consumers.
